The Tree Board works with the Community Development Manager to make recommendations regarding the City's tree programs. They meet at the City Office on the third Tuesday of each month, on an as needed basis, with varying starting times.
Spring 2019 Dexter Street Tree Resident Cost-Sharing Program - Applications are now being accepted. This is an opportunity for City residents to have a new tree planted in their lawn extensions. Your cost to participate in this program is $150. This $150, plus approximately $150 per tree from the City’s restricted tree fund, covers the purchase and installation of a 2-2½ inch caliper tree and includes a one-year warranty. Once the tree has been planted, it is the buyer’s responsibility to maintain and care for that tree, including watering it diligently during the first three years, especially during droughts. The City provides tree watering bags to help you with irrigation. Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2019. Click here for an application. Please contact the Office of Community Development is you have any questions 734-580-2233.
Arbor Day 2019 - April 26, 2019
The City's Annual Arbor Day Celebration is be held annually to celebrate the benefits of trees, including how trees can reduce erosion of topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife.
Last year the City's Tree Board members and volunteers distributed over 200 free seedlings on Arbor Day. A list of seedlings to be given away this year will be posted soon.
The City of Dexter has been a proud Tree City USA member since 2008. Tree City USA is a nationwide Arbor Day Foundation program that promotes proper tree care and management in urban areas and calls attention to the economic health and aesthetic benefits trees offer. Trees are also beneficial because they are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and help beautify and give our community character. The community will be asked to participate in the celebration and to plant trees throughout the City and on your property to promote the well-being of this and future generations.
