Sewer Manhole Preventative Maintenance

April 21, 2017

As part of the preventative maintenance we perform on our sewer system, sewer manholes throughout the City are inspected each year. The inspection allows us to identify three major things: (1) the condition of the manhole (2) whether the sewer water flowing properly and (3) whether storm water is getting into the manhole causing unnecessary water flow to get to the waste water treatment plant. If an issue is identified, it can be dealt with before it becomes a larger problem, generally through having the line cleaned and televised. In some cases manholes have become covered with grass and have sunk below the grade level of the lawn or sidewalk. Staff will be installing risers on these manholes to raise them to grade level. The manholes need to be easily accessible for preventative maintenance and for emergencies. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Utility Department at 734-426-4572 during the hours of 7:00 am and 3:30 pm. Thank you for your cooperation during this effort to maintain our sewer system.
